When Punk meets Spunk

Coming from a family which always enjoyed old-time music, (think BeeGees, The Carpenters, Jim Reeves) I was quite intrigued to be asked out by the lead vocalist of a local punk band in 2009. It came as no surprise when we realised that we were musically incompatible! What a tragedy for a musician, especially one who liked rocking it with his guitar and singing at the top of his lungs to the likes of Stellar Kart and Simple plan. I, who preferred plain old ABBA, would probably be his worst nightmare left standing on the sidelines gaping in disbelief wondering how this would ever work out! But, destiny wouldn't have it any other way and we ended up getting married in 2011.

Living with a musician, let me tell you, is not always fun though there are more pros than cons! For starters, there's never a dull moment at home. I thought 'air guitaring' was just a term coined by hubby dearest, but well, who knew--the term does exist! My vocabulary, on the other hand, has definitely improved! The word 'patch', I thought, was only used when you wanted to fix a torn garment and 'riff' was perhaps the word 'rift' pronounced incorrectly and isn't a 'cape-o' (spelt capo, actually!) something only Batman wore? On the arrival of our daughter, I remember walking out of the hospital hoping she'd be able to hit 'falsettos' the way daddy could! Expectations ran high after the birth of our baby girl and I silently hoped that my very talented hubby would write her a song too the way he did for me on our wedding day. (Yes, It was the most beautiful song ever but I refused to shed a tear for fear of ruining my makeup!) He didn't disappoint this time around too and it is now with sheer delight our little girl listens to him sing and play for her! Besides being a carbon copy of him, I had someone recently tell me that the way she cried too was very rhythmic! This has just taken the term 'daddy's little princess' to a whole new level!

Being an ardent lover of old music, I was of the opinion that musicians today could only create, well, noise! But, over the years and after a lot of exposure, it has become undeniably clear that good music still lives. When I took the time to listen and understand my husband's choice of music, my opinionated self realised that opposites do attract and I have actually taken quite a fondness to some of his favourite bands! Don't get me wrong, I haven't succumbed to his choice in music denying myself the occasional indulgence in old-time music but I'd like to say that our home now has the perfect balance of both genres! (Don Moen meets Switchfoot?) Four years and one daughter later, we respect each other's choices so much more, we're more 'synchronised' than ever before and dare I say it, I now have him dancing to my tunes...literally!
